Fargo Wedding Painter | Live Wedding Painting in Fargo – Josh & Sommer
Josh and Sommer’s wedding took place in Fargo, North Dakota, at the Jasmine Hotel. The scene I painted was their first dance as a married couple. This was my very first live wedding painting, and it is still one of my all-time favorites.
As a Fargo wedding painter, this piece taught me so much about timing, lighting, and storytelling through art.
Choosing the Perfect Moment for a Live Wedding Painting
The biggest challenge with this painting was the timing of the scene. The couple chose their first dance, which happens later in the evening. I arrived before the ceremony to set up, scout the space, and find the best angle. Since I was painting live, I tucked myself in near the DJ so I could capture the moment as it unfolded.
The venue’s fifth floor features floor-to-ceiling windows and a wraparound balcony, which provided incredible natural light during the day. That light made it easy to paint the background and understand the space, even though the actual first dance took place later in the evening. The painting reflects that beautiful daytime glow while still honoring the emotion of the moment.
Working Live in a Changing Wedding Space
This Fargo wedding took place in a single room that was transformed multiple times throughout the day. The ceremony, reception, and dancing all happened in the same space, with the setup changing between events. Because of this, I wasn’t able to take an early reference photo of the scene.
When the first dance began, I worked fast. I took about 75 photos and videos in just a short window of time. That ended up being a blessing. The final painting became a composite of five to six reference photos, combined with what I observed and painted live in the moment.
This is a common process in live wedding painting. It allows me to create a polished, emotionally accurate piece while still keeping the spontaneity of the event.
Letting the Couple Be the Focus
This painting helped me define an important artistic rule that I still use today:
the couple is always the star of the show.
The background and guests should support the story without competing for attention. By keeping the surroundings softer and slightly blurred, the bride and groom naturally stand out. Your eye goes straight to their connection, their movement, and their emotion.
That balance is what makes a live wedding painting feel timeless and romantic.
A Moment That Became Instantly Recognizable
One of my favorite parts of this story is what happened later. Someone approached Josh and Sommer in public and asked if they had their wedding painted. They were recognized purely from the image in the artwork.
That’s the power of live wedding painting. It captures not just what your wedding looked like, but what it felt like.
